Rhona Howie

(Rhona Martin)

1966 -

Curling champion. A housewife and mother born and raised in Dunlop (East Ayrshire), Howie played with Greenacres Curling Club in Howwood (Renfrewshire). She led (or 'skipped') the Curling Team which took the Gold Medal in the 2002 Winter Olympics in Salt Lake City (USA). Howie and her team narrowly made the semi-final where they triumphed over favourites Canada and then beat Switzerland in an exceptionally tense final where the match was won with the last stone. The remainder of the team comprised Fiona MacDonald (b. 1974), Janice Rankin (b. 1972), Debbie Knox (b. 1968) and Margaret Morton (b. 1968). These were the first British women's team to win gold in any Olympic event. Howie also won a silver medal at the 1998 European Championships and was named Scottish Ladies Champion in 2000. She was awarded an MBE in the Queen's Birthday Honours List (2002).

Perhaps better known as Rhona Martin, she reverted to her maiden name following the breakdown of her marriage in 2005. Howie provided commentary on the curling at the 2018 and 2022 Winter Olympics for the BBC, while the BBC Scotland documentary The Last Stone celebrated the 20th anniversary of her team's 2002 achievement.
