Footballer and broadcaster. Born in Alloa, Hansen joined the Glasgow-based Partick Thistle Football Club in 1973, turning down a place at the University of Aberdeen to follow a career in football.

In 1977, he joined the English team Liverpool for a transfer fee of £100,000 and gained a reputation as an outstanding and intelligent centre-back, known for his precise passing.
