Footballer and broadcaster. Born in Alloa, Hansen joined the Glasgow-based Partick Thistle Football Club in 1973, turning down a place at the University of Aberdeen to follow a career in football.
In 1977, he joined the English team Liverpool for a transfer fee of £100,000 and gained a reputation as an outstanding and intelligent centre-back, known for his precise passing. During his 14 years at Liverpool, the team won seven League Championships, three European Cups, two F.A. Cups and four League Cups and thus became one of the most successful British soccer players of all time. He was also capped 26 times by Scotland between 1979 and 1986. Hansen captained Liverpool between 1985 and 1990, but a knee injury ended his playing career in 1991.
Subsequently, he worked as a broadcaster, first for Sky and then joining the BBC's Match of the Day team in 1992. He also writes regular columns in the Express newspaper. Living in Southport, Hansen is also a gifted amateur golfer.
