American governor. Born in Linlithgow (West Lothian), Glen served for a time as an excise inspector before studying law at the university in Leiden. He served as Provost of Linlithgow between 1724-25 and again 1730-37.
Glen was appointed Governor of South Carolina in 1738, taking up residence there in 1743 after five years negotiating terms. He became known as an energetic administrator, noted for co-operating with the Native Americans and gaining their support against the French. He concluded the Saluda Old Town Treaty with the Cherokee people in 1755. Glen served until 1756, representing the longest term of any of South Carolina's colonial governors. He published A Description of South Carolina in 1761. He returned to Linlithgow in 1761, becoming Keeper of Linlithgow Palace until his death.
Remembered as an energetic administrator and able negotiator, Glen died in London but lies buried in Linlithgow.
