Sydney Devine


1940 - 2021

Country and western singer. Born in Cleland (North Lanarkshire), Devine first performed on television as a teenager. Devine has sold more than 15 million records during a career that has included work with artists from Dolly Parton to the Jackson Five. His unique brand of whistling and yodeling-infused music includes hits such as Tiny Bubbles, Answer to Everything and Ten Guitars. He has also produced a series of popular line-dancing videos. He was still touring in 2020 and had recorded a remarkable 45-year run at the Glasgow Pavilion Theatre.

Devine was awarded an MBE in HM the Queen's Birthday Honours List of 2003 and a Scottish Music Hall and Variety Theatre Society lifetime achievement award (2014). Devine lived in Ayr and died in University Hospital there a day after he announced the release a new single supporting the National Heath Service.
