Saint Winning

(St. Winning or St. Winnin)

7th C. - 8th C.

Missionary. Little is known about St. Winning (or St. Winnin) although some sources suggest he was an Irish missionary who landed at the mouth of the River Garnock in 715, while others suggest he was Scottish and yet others that he was Welsh. He may have been a bishop or an abbot. He is thought to have travelled through the west of Scotland, converting the local people to Christianity and establishing places of worship. What is known is that he founded a church at Kilwinning, on the site of which Kilwinning Abbey was built four centuries later. As well as in the name of Kilwinning itself, his name is commemorated by St. Winning's Well and Carwinning Hill.
