St. Boisil, Bosiel or Boswell was most-likely born in Northumberland (England) and trained at Lindisfarne under St. Aidan. He came to the new religious foundation at Melrose in the 640s and became its Abbot around 659. He attracted the young St. Cuthbert to Melrose and instructed him in the scriptures. Bede described Boswell as a great scholar and credits him with the gift of precognition (second sight). Boswell was buried at Melrose Abbey, where his tomb attracted pilgrims, although his relics are said to have been taken to Durham and subsequently lost.
The village and parish of St. Boswells are named in his honour.
