Clementina Walkinshaw

1720 - 1802

Jacobite and mistress of the 'Young Pretender'. Most likely born in Camlachie, Walkinshaw was the daughter of a wealthy Glasgow merchant who was an Episcopalian but had supported the Jacobites in 1715 and was captured at Sheriffmuir, although later pardoned. Walkinshaw spent much of her youth in France where she converted to Roman Catholicism. She met the 'Bonnie Prince' in Glasgow during the winter of 1745 and they were living together in Ghent (Belgium) by 1752. Walkinshaw bore Stuart a daughter, Charlotte, the following year, who he much later accepted as legitimate and gave the title the Duchess of Albany. However Stuart was becoming a drunkard and abused his mistress such that she left him in 1760, retiring with their daughter to a Paris convent where she lived on a generous pension from Stuart's father James Francis Edward (1688 - 1766).

Walkinshaw died in Switzerland.
