John Veitch

Philosopher, poet and historian. Born in Peebles, where he was educated Burgh Grammar School. He went on to study at the University of Edinburgh, under Sir William Hamilton ((1788 - 1856). He was appointed Professor of Logic and Rhetoric at the University of St. Andrews in 1860, and then Professor at the University of Glasgow (1864). His works include The River Tweed from its Source to the Sea (1884), Institutes of Logic (1885), The Feeling for Nature in Scottish Poetry (1887) and Knowing and Being (1889). He died in Peebles, where he lies buried. There is a prominent fountain on the High Street dedicated to his memory, together with a further memorial situated at the foot of Dollar Law in Manor Valley.
