Covenanter. Having had military experience in the Netherlands and Sweden, Leslie took charge of a Scottish Army which marched into England, not to make war on England (indeed no war was declared) but rather to convince Charles I of the error of his ways. Charles tried to placate Leslie with a peerage in 1641. However, following procrastination on the part of the King, Leslie led an army which defeated the royalists at Marston Moor (1644).
The execution of Charles I was regarded as too extreme by many Scots and thus Leslie gave allegiance to Charles II against Cromwell.
