Andrew Strath

1836 - 1868

Golf champion. Born St Andrews, Strath began his career as an apprentice club-maker. He achieved an excellent record in the Open Championship; winning at Prestwick in 1865, having been the runner-up the previous year, third in 1860, fourth in 1863 and fourth again in 1867. Strath succeeded 'Old' Tom Morris (1821 - 1908) as the Green Keeper at Prestwick in 1865 but died of tuberculosis just three years later.

His brother David was runner-up in the Open both in 1872 and 1876 and another brother, George, was the first professional at Troon and later emigrated for the USA. The family is remembered by the 'Strath' bunker on which stands in front of the 11th green on the St Andrews Old Course.
