Swimming champion. Born in Helensburgh, the son of a water-polo champion who moved his family to Falkirk to manage the swimming pool in the town. McGregor was educated at Falkirk High School and first swam for Scotland aged 16. He later graduated in architecture from the University of Strathclyde.
Known as the 'Falkirk Flyer', he set a new world record of 53.6 seconds for the 110 yards in 1964. In the same year, he captained the British swimming team at the Tokyo Olympics and won a silver medal in the 100m freestyle. 1966 was his most successful year: he won a silver medal at the Commonwealth Games held in Kingston Jamaica, a gold at the European Championships in Utrecht (Netherlands) and then broke his own 110 yard record at the British Championships, reducing it to 53.3 seconds. McGregor was awarded an MBE in the New Year Honours List of 1965.
He retired from competitive swimming after the 1968 Olympics in Mexico City, at which he only achieved a fourth place, and went on to become a partner in a Glasgow firm of architects. McGregor was inducted as one of the first members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2002.
