Sir James Miller

1905 - 1977

Housebuilder and politician. Born in Edinburgh, the son of an architect, Miller was educated at George Heriot's School. With his brothers, Miller founded the Edinburgh-based housebuilders James Miller & Partners Ltd. in 1934. He was elected to the Edinburgh Town Council in 1936, becoming City Treasurer in 1947 and Lord Provost (1951-54), during which time he was knighted. He was appointed Lord Mayor of London in 1964.

While primarily building houses in the East of Scotland in its early years, the company expanded to undertake other forms of construction throughout the UK in the Post-War years. Miller retired as Chairman in 1970 and as a Director in 1973. Under his nephew Keith Miller (b.1949), Miller Group has grown into Britain's biggest privately-owned construction and property company.

Miller was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Edinburgh in 1953.
