Thomas (Tommy) Docherty


1928 - 2020

Football player and manager. Born in the Gorbals (Glasgow), he began his career with the junior club Shettleston but following National Service, during which time he played for an army team, he was offered a contract with Celtic. His finest playing days were with Preston North End (1949-58) although he also played for Arsenal and Chelsea. He began his management career with Chelsea in 1961 and spent the next 27 years with various teams. Docherty was best known for his five years managing Manchester United, presiding over an FA Cup Final win over Liverpool in 1977. He also served as manager of the National Team (1971-72).

He died at his home in Marple (Greater Manchester).
