Jean Elliot

1727 - 1805

Song writer. The third daughter of Sir Gilbert Elliot of Minto, who was Lord Justice Clerk for Scotland, Elliot wrote what is perhaps the most notable version of The Flowers of the Forest, which laments the disaster of Flodden Field (1513). Published in 1776, it is her only surviving work. Elliot set her lyrics to an old tune which was amongst the melodies collected by John Skene of Hallyards.

She died at Monteviot House.
