Musician and politician. Born in Dunfermline (Fife) Wishart was educated at Queen Anne High School and at Moray House in Edinburgh. He was politically active as a member of the Labour Party whilst a student, however his first career was established in music as a founder-member of the rock band Big Country, with Stuart Adamson (1958 - 2001), and then he spent fifteen years playing keyboards in the folk-rock group Runrig with Donnie Munro (b.1953), Calum Macdonald (b.1953) and Rory Macdonald (b.1949). Wishart was elected as the Scottish Nationalist Member of Parliament for North Tayside in 2001 and, following boundary changes, Perth and North Perthshire from 2005. He served as Shadow Spokesperson for the SNP on Environment, Food and Rural Affairs and on Transport (2001-05), on Culture, Media and Sport (2001-15), on Justice and Home Affairs (2007-10) and on the Constitution (2010-15). In 2015, he was appointed Chair of the Scottish Affairs Select Committee and SNP Shadow Leader of the House of Commons.
A prominent campaigner against drugs, Wishart lives in Perth and remains a member of the Westminster Parliament rock group MP4.
