Jean Dunlop Cadell


1884 - 1967

Actress. Born in Edinburgh, the daughter of a surgeon and sister of painter Francis Campbell Boileau Cadell (1883 - 1937), Cadell was a successful character actress, noted for her striking red hair. She performed on stage and screen, appearing in almost 50 films over six decades. One of her most memorable roles being the curmudgeonly Mrs. Campbell in Alexander Mackendrick's film Whisky Galore! (1949), based on the Compton Mackenzie novel of the same name, and reprising this role in Rockets Galore! (1957). She also appeared in the Michael and Pressburger drama I Know Where I'm Going (1945) set on Mull. Her other films included The Loves of Robert Burns (1930), her first 'talkie'; David Copperfield (1935); Pygmalion (1938); A Taste of Money (1960) and Very Important Person (1961).

Cadell died in London. Her grandchildren Simon and Selena Cadell also became actors.
