Margaret Anne Marshall


1949 -

Soprano Born in Stirling, Marshall studied at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama in Glasgow, and came to prominence when she won first prize at the Munich International Competition in 1974. She made her London debut at the Wigmore Hall the following year. Her operatic debut came in Florence in 1978, subsequently appearing at Covent Garden, La Scala Milan and the Salzburg Festival. She has worked with all the major British orchestras, including the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, together with Scottish Opera. Internationally she has worked with many great orchestras, for example, the Berliner Philharmoniker, the Boston Symphony and the Chicago Symphony, under such notable conductors as Claudio Abbado, Daniel Barenboim and Riccardo Muti. She has toured in the USA on several occasions.

Marshall was awarded an OBE in 1999 and an honorary degree by the University of St. Andrews in 2009.
