James Gray Stuart


(Viscount Stuart of Findhorn)

1897 - 1971

Politician. Born in Edinburgh, the son of Morton Stuart, 17th Earl of Moray (1855 - 1930). Stuart served as Unionist Member of Parliament for Moray and Nairn between 1923 and 1959, rising to become Conservative Chief Whip (1941-48) and a member of Churchill's War Cabinet. He served as Secretary of State for Scotland (1951-57) and Chairman of Scottish Unionist Party (1950-62).

He was raised to the peerage with the hereditary title Viscount Stuart of Findhorn in 1959. Stuart married the sister-in-law of Harold Macmillan (1894 - 1986), Conservative Leader from 1957-63.
