Jean Waddell

Hostage. Brought up in Arbroath, Waddell moved to London in 1965 and worked as a medical secretary before being appointed Secretary to the Anglican Archbishop of Jerusalem in 1965. She survived shelling during the Six Day War in 1967. In 1977 she moved to become Secretary to the Anglican Bishop of Iran, but the Iranian Revolution followed just two years later. In the dangerous times which followed, she was shot in her flat in Tehran and left for dead. She was held hostage by the Iranian Revolutionary Government for seven months, but he release was negotiated by Envoy Terry Waite and she eventually returned home and continued her job as a secretary.
