Charles Smith

1920 - 2006

Local historian. Born and brought up in Maxwell Street (Edinburgh), Smith spent most of his life in the Morningside district of the city. Perhaps best known for his Historic South Edinburgh (published as four volumes 1978-88, updated 2000), Smith became highly respected for his books and pamphlets on the city.

In 2006, shortly before his death, a plaque dedicated to him was unveiled in Maxwell Street.
