Cricketer, whose promising career was curtailed by his early death. Born in Rutherglen (South Lanarkshire), the cousin of footballer James Jackson, his family moved to Sydney (Australia) in 1913. As a teenager he was quickly recognised for his abilities on the cricket pitch and by the age of 17 was playing for New South Wales. Within two years he was a member of the Australian team and scored 164 against England at Adelaide Oval in his maiden Test innings. He was the youngest member of the team which toured England in 1930 and faced the West Indies at home later the same year. His performance has been favourably compared with his remarkable team-mate Don Bradman, but Jackson was never able to reach his potential because, suffering from tuberculosis, he died in Brisbane at the age of only 23. He was buried in Sydney. Thousands lined the streets as his funeral cortege passed and his coffin was carried by the several of the leading cricketers of the day.
