(Alexander) Esmé Gordon

1910 - 1993

Architect. Born in Edinburgh, the son of a solicitor, Gordon was raised on Heriot Row. He was educated at Edinburgh Academy and trained in architecture at the Edinburgh College of Art. He worked for a time in London and served in the Royal Engineers during World War II.

Gordon worked on restorations of St Giles' Cathedral, Canongate Kirk, and St. Andrew's Church in George Street. He designed several new churches and the Gannochy Sports Pavilion in Perth. His other clients included Heriot-Watt University, Moray House College of Education, banks and insurance companies.

He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1967 and served as its Honorary Secretary (1973-78).

Gordon died in Edinburgh.
