Naval commander. Born in Dunfermline, Mitchell joined the navy in 1771 and reached the rank of Captain within seven years. He distinguished himself in India in 1782 and was given command of the Indian Station. Promoted to Rear Admiral in 1795, he was responsible for naval operations during the Anglo-Russian Invasion of Holland in 1799 and was knighted the following year.
Mitchell served as Commander-in-Chief of the North America and West Indies Stations from 1802 but fell ill and died in Bermuda just four years later.
