William Boyd


1952 -

Author. Born in Ghana to Scottish parents, Boyd was raised in Nigeria, where his father was a doctor, but educated at Gordonstoun School in Moray, before studying in France and then attending the University of Glasgow and Jesus College, Oxford. He remained in Oxford as an English lecturer at St. Hilda's College (1980-83), during which time he published his first novel, A Good Man in Africa (1981). His third book, An Ice Cream War, was nominated for the Booker Prize for Fiction in 1982. His more recent books include Restless (2006) and Ordinary Thunderstorms (2009).

Boyd was awarded an OBE in 2005 and now lives in London.
