An Irish monk, who brought Christianity to the North West Highlands. Maelrubha was born in Londonderry, a descendant of Niall King of Ireland, and educated in Bangor. He came to Applecross (Abercrossan) in Wester Ross and founded a monastery here in 673, which was the base for his ministry, which extended from Skye and Lewis in the west, to Forres and Keith in the east, and north to Durness and Farr. He was killed by the Vikings, most likely in Strath Naver, where he is said to be buried, although some sources suggest he was buried at Applecross.
