Sir Alexander Baird


1849 - 1920

Colonial administrator. The son of John Baird of Ury, Baird was educated at Harrow School. He spent much of his career in Egypt, spoke Arabic and was President of the Permanent Arbitration Board. He served as Lord Lieutenant of Kincardineshire (1889 - 1918), was created a Baronet in 1897 and appointed Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire (GBE) in 1920. He lived at Ury House (overlooking Stonehaven), which he had extended in 1884.

His eldest son John (1874 - 1941) was Governor General of Australia and was raised to the peerage as Viscount Stonehaven.
