John Morgan Aitken


1850 - 1923

Architect and building contractor. Born in Lerwick, the son of a mason, Aitken trained in Edinburgh and returned to Shetland where he became responsible for the construction of many of Shetland's public buildings. These include Lerwick Town Hall (1874), the Grand Hotel in Lerwick (1887), two piers in the harbour at Symbister (Whalsay; 1895), the St. Magnus Bay Hotel in Hillswick (1896) and the Lerwick Central Public School (1902). He died in Lerwick.
