Sir Alexander Knox Helm


1893 - 1964

Diplomat. Born in Dumfries and educated at Dumfries Academy and King's College, Cambridge, Helm joined the Foreign Office in 1912 which led to a career as a diplomat. He began as a clerk, was released for service during the First World War but then was selected for training for the consular service. He served in Greece, Turkey, Ethiopia and then in the British Embassy in the USA at the outbreak of the Second World War. After the war he was posted to Hungary and then became the first British Ambassador to newly-created state of Israel (1949-51). Finally, he was appointed Ambassador to Turkey (1951-54) and the last Governor-General of the Sudan (1955-6). He was awarded an OBE (1924), CBE (1932) and knighted in 1949.
