Paralympic rower. Born in Dunfermline, Smith was brought up in Badenoch, attending Newtonmore Primary and Kingussie High School. He completed his education at the University of Bath. Having competed for Great Britain in karate (1993-99) and bobsleigh (2002-08), he won gold medals in the World Rowing Championships of 2009 and 2011. This was followed by a gold medal at the Paralympics in London in 2012 with a further gold at the Munich World Cup the same year.
Awarded an MBE in the New Year's Honours List of 2013, he now lives in Ascot (England)
