Neil Mackie


1946 -

Tenor. Born in Aberdeen and educated at Aberdeen Grammar School, Mackie trained at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama. He was Professor of Singing at the Royal College of Music (1985 - 2008) and Head of the Department of Vocal Studies (1994 - 2006). He took up the post of Professor of Singing at the Royal Academy of Music in 2009. Mackie is particularly noted for performing the works of Benjamin Britten, Sir Peter Maxwell Davies and Kenneth Leighton. Maxwell Davies is said to have written works especially for Mackie: the title role in The Martyrdom of St. Magnus, Sandy in The Lighthouse, Into the Labyrinth and A Solstice of Light.

Mackie was awarded an honorary degree by the University of Aberdeen in 1993 and a CBE in the New Year Honours of 1996. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in the same year.
