Champion boxer, known as the Tartan Tornado. Born in Prestonpans (East Lothian) and educated at Preston Lodge High School, Taylor began his sporting career with Taekwondo at age five, but began boxing at fifteen. He was inspired by Alex Arthur (b. 1978) watching him train at Meadowbank Stadium in Edinburgh, where his mother worked. As an amateur, he won a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Youth Games (2008), a silver medal the in the Delhi Commonwealth Games (2010) and a gold medal in the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow (2014). The latter represented Scotland's best boxing performance at a Commonwealth Games since 1962. Turning professional, he won the Commonwealth light-welterweight title at Meadowbank Stadium in 2016, the WBC Silver light-welterweight title at the Braehead Arena in 2017, the IBF light-welterweight world title at the SSE Hydro in Glasgow (2019), the WBA title later the same year and the WBC title in 2021, making him the undisputed world champion across all the various professional boxing competitions. This was the first time a Scot had achieved this accolade.
He trains with the Great Britain boxing squad in Sheffield (England), while competing at Lochend Boxing Club in Edinburgh at the weekends.
