John Maclaren Barclay

1811 - 1886

Minor portrait painter. Born in Perth, Barclay was educated at Perth Academy and the Trustees Academy in Edinburgh, following his friends David Octavius Hill (1802-70) and Thomas Duncan (1807-45). He is noted for portraits of local and national figures of the time, but occasionally produced historical works. Barclay returned for a time to Perth in the 1840s, but settled in Edinburgh where he eventually died. He was elected to the Royal Scottish Academy in 1863 and several of his works are held by Perth Museum and Art Gallery.
