General Sir John Low


1788 - 1880

Indian army commander. Low was born on the family estate at Clatto in NE Fife and educated at the University of St Andrews. He joined the Army of the East India Company in 1805 as an Ensign, rising to the rank of Brigadier-General in the Indian Army in 1857 and General in 1867. He returned to Britain 1842-47 due to ill health but returned to India to serve as the Resident at Lucknow (1831-42) and at Hyderabad (1852-53), adopting a sympathetic position during the Indian Mutiny. Low was knighted in 1862 and was appointed a Knight Grand Commander of the Star of India in 1873. He died in England but was buried in Kemback (Fife).
