William Muir

(William McDonald McGregor Muir)

1828 - 1910

Self-taught artist. Born in Ayr (South Ayrshire), Muir moved to Girvan shortly after his marriage in 1858, where he worked as a master-baker. However, he is better known as an artist, producing many landscapes of local scenes, often featuring the sea. His paintings were exhibited in London as well as in Scotland. In retirement, he followed his son to Tasmania (Australia), where he continued to paint. He died in Wynyard in Tasmania and it is here he lies buried. South Ayrshire Council hold a number of his works at Rozelle House (Ayr) and the McKechnie Institute (Girvan), although some were unfortunately destroyed when the McMaster Hall in Girvan burned down in 1939.
