Saint Inan

(St. Inan. St. Evan)

9th C. - ?

Monk and preacher. Thought to have come from Iona, Inan (or Evan) is said to have visited Rome and Jerusalem. He then settled in Ayrshire, where he lived as a hermit in Irvine. He is also associated with Beith (North Ayrshire), where there is an annual St. Inan's Gala, and he is said to have preached from St. Inan's Chair on Lochlands Hill near the town. There are several churches in Scotland dedicated to him and his name appears in Inchinnan (Renfrewshire). Some scholars suggest he may be the same person as St. Ninian, who lived in the 5th C.
