Sarah Smith


1968 -

Political reporter and television presenter. Born in Edinburgh, the eldest daughter of Labour party leader John Smith (1938-94) and Baroness Smith of Gilmorehill (b.1940), she was raised in Morningside where she was educated at Boroughmuir High School, and then the University of Glasgow. She began her career in journalism with BBC Scotland, moving to London to become a producer in 1991. She then moved to ITN Productions, working on 5 News and then fifteen years with Channel 4 News, before returning to the BBC as their Scotland Editor. Smith presents Sunday Politics on BBC One, succeeding Andrew Neil (b.1949), is an occasional anchor of Newsnight on BBC Two and a regular presenter on BBC Radio 4's Today programme. She lives in Edinburgh.
