Thomas Gillespie


1708 - 1774

Clergyman. Born at Clearburn, to the south of Prestonfield House in Edinburgh, and educated at the University of Edinburgh. He studied theology at Perth and in Northampton (England) before becoming minister of Carnock (Fife) in 1741. He broke with the Church of Scotland and formed a new Relief Church (1752) in Colinsburgh which much later became part of the United Presbyterian Church. He continued to preach at Carnock and then at Dunfermline.
