James (Jim) Mellon


1957 -

Financier. Born in Edinburgh, the son of a diplomat, Mellon was educated at Ampleforth College (Yorkshire) and then Oriel College, Oxford. He began his career as a fund manager, working in Hong Kong and San Francisco. With a partner, he founded his own company in 1984 which was soon sold making him a millionaire. He funded another investment company in 1992, Regent Pacific, which again did well. Subsequently he has made money by investing in bio-tech, gaming and mining. By 2017, he was a billionaire. He has given money to build a new student residence, the James Mellon Hall in Oxford, and contributed to scientific research. He is now based on the Isle of Man, but maintains homes around the world.
