Judy Murray

(Judy Erskine)

1959 -

Celebrity tennis coach. Born Judy Erskine in Bridge of Allan (Stirling) and raised in Dunblane, Murray was the daughter of an optician who was a former professional football player. She was educated at Morrison's Academy in Crieff and the University of Edinburgh. While perhaps best known as the determined mother of tennis stars Sir Andy Murray (b. 1987) and Jamie Murray (b. 1986), Murray has had a successful tennis career of her own, both as a player and coach. She won several junior and amateur tennis titles, and briefly played professionally. Describing herself as an "alleged pushy mum", she coached her sons in their early years. Murray went on to coach a number of other players, serving as both a Scottish National Coach and Captain of the British Federation Cup team (2011-16). In particular she has set out to create opportunities for women and girls in tennis. She has become a popular participant in television talk and game shows, including Loose Women and Lorraine, with Lorraine Kelly (b. 1959), and also took part in Strictly Come Dancing (2014).

She was awarded an honorary doctorates by the University of Edinburgh (2013), University of Stirling (2013), University of Aberdeen (2016), University of Glasgow (2016), Abertay University (2016) and an OBE (2017). Murray now lives in Bridge of Allan.
