David Newton


1958 -

Jazz pianist, accompanist and educator. Born in Glasgow and raised in Renfrewshire, where he attended Eastwood High School, Newton trained at the Leeds School of Music. Returning to Scotland in the early 1980s, he settled in Edinburgh, made his recording debut in 1986 but moved to London the following year. Newton was appointed a Fellow of Leeds College of Music in 2003, and is a Principal Lecturer in jazz piano at what has become the Leeds Conservatoire.

Newton has recorded fifteen solo albums and collaborated on over eighty more with other artists. Recognised as having given the Outstanding Solo Performance of the Year in 1995, he was voted best jazz pianist in the British Jazz Awards for the thirteenth time in 2014
