Musician and novelist. Born in Dumbarton (West Dunbartonshire) and raised in Alexandria. He was educated at the Vale of Leven Academy and Clydebank Technical College, before meeting Stuart Murdoch (b. 1968) in Glasgow and forming the band Belle and Sebastian in 1994. In 2000, he went on to front with another band, Looper, but also devoted time to writing. His novels include Nalda Said (1999), The Peacock Manifesto (2001), A Peacock's Tale (2011), Jackdaw and the Randoms (2015), Peacock's Alibi (2018) and With Love From Evil Bob (2019).
