Designer and jewellery maker. Born Euphemia Thompson on a farm near Ardrishaig in Argyll, Ritchie studied embroidery at Glasgow School of Art, where she met her husband Alexander Ritchie (1856 - 1941). The couple made their home at Shuna Cottage at Baile Mor on Iona around 1889, where they set up a silversmithing workshop. The Ritchies designed silver and enamel jewellery, and other larger domestic items, which became influential within the arts and crafts movement. Their designs used Celtic, Viking and Pictish symbols, and their work was of exceptional quality. Initially the couple sold their work to visitors to the island but it soon gained a much wider reputation.
Effie died at Shuna Cottage and lies buried next to her husband in St. Oran's Graveyard (Rèilig Odhrain), the burial ground of the Kings on Iona.
