Booker prize-winning novelist. Born in Sighthill (Glasgow), his father soon abandoned the family and his alcoholic mother died when Stuart was just sixteen. He graduated from the Heriot-Watt University's College of Textiles in Galashiels and went on to postgraduate study at the Royal College of Art in London. In 2000, he moved to New York to work in fashion design. Stuart's first novel, Shuggie Bain, explores his relationship with his mother and won the Booker Prize in 2020. He was only the second Scot to win this prestigious award, following James Kelman (b. 1946), who served as Stuart's inspiration. His second novel, Loch Awe, is set in mid-nineties Glasgow.
