Alexander Ellis

1830 - 1917

Architect. Born in Aberdeen, the son of ship's captain, who died at sea in 1838. Ellis was educated at Robert Gordon's College and entered Marischal College aged only 14, but never graduated. Between 1846-51, he served an apprenticeship with local architect John Smith (1781 - 1852) and his son William. Ellis designed a few commercial and ecclesiastical buildings, but most of his work was domestic. He worked with the artist James Giles (1801-70) and several projects including the James McGrigor Monument in Duthie Park. Ellis suffered from depression in his later years and died in the Aberdeen Royal Asylum.
