William (Bill) Bryden


1942 - 2022

Theatre director, screenwriter and television executive. Born in Greenock, he trained with Scottish Television before becoming a theatre director in Coventry (1965). He then worked as Director at the Royal Court Theatre in London (1967-71), the Royal Lyceum Theatre, Edinburgh (1972-75), and an Associate Director at the National Theatre in London (1975-85). He served as Head of Drama at BBC Scotland (1984-93), where he produced award-winning plays for television including John Byrne's Tutti Frutti with Robbie Coltrane and Emma Thompson. His theatre work included writing and directing The Ship in the former Harland & Wolff ship-building yard in Govan during Glasgow's time as European City of Culture in 1990. Bryden was awarded a CBE in 1993 and died in London.
