Steve Bronski

(Steven William Forrest)

1960 - 2021

Musician and gay activist. Born Steven William Forrest in Castlemilk (Glasgow), Bronski began as a labourer before moving to London to pursue a musical career. In 1983, he founded Bronski Beat with Jimmy Sommerville (b. 1961) and Larry Steinbachek. The band was known for the hits Smalltown Boy, Why? and It Ain't Necessarily So from their debut album The Age of Consent (1984), with Bronski playing keyboards. This was followed by another album Truthdare Doubledare (1986) but the band broke up in 1996, although was briefly revived in 2015. Bronski lived in Thailand and Paris, before returning to Britain. He suffered a stroke in 2018, which limited his mobility, and died following a fire at his home in Soho (London).
