Colin Montgomerie

1963 -

Golfer. Born in Glasgow, his father was Secretary to the Royal Troon Golf Club. Montgomerie was educated at Strathallan School (Perth and Kinross) and attended Houston Baptist University in the USA, with a golf scholarship. He became a professional golfer in 1987, having won the Scottish Amateur Championship in 1984. For a time 'Monty' consistently topped the leader-boards at both the European and the PGA tours and, in 1996, he became the first golfer in history to win over US$3 million world-wide in a season. Montgomerie was a member of the team which regained the Ryder Cup for Europe in 2002 and again in 2004.

After a period of some three years during which time his golfing performance suffered as a result of personal problems and a divorce, he entered the British Open at St Andrews in 2005, ranked 83 in the world, yet gave one of his best performances finishing second to Tiger Woods. In 2010 he captained the successful European Ryder Cup team and described the experience as 'the proudest moment of my career'.

He was awarded an OBE in the New Year's Honours list of 2005.

The Colin Montgomerie Golf Academy is located at Turnberry (South Ayrshire).
