Gavin Hastings


1962 -

Rugby player. Born in Edinburgh, Hastings was educated at George Watson's College in the city and then Paisley College. After his first match for his country in 1986, he went on to gain 61 caps for Scotland, 20 of which were as Captain. He played for the British Lions on six occasions and in three World Cups from 1987-95. The pinnacle of his career was perhaps his try against France which gave Scotland their first win in Paris for 26 years.

The Scottish National Portrait Gallery includes a portrait of Hastings by artist David Mach (1996) and he became one of the first members of the Scottish Sports Hall of Fame in 2001.
