Sir James Erskine of Torrie

1772 - 1825

Soldier, amateur artist and collector. Erskine lived at Torrie House, near Low Torry (Fife). He joined the army in 1794, and rose to the rank of Lieutenant-General, serving with the Duke of Wellington against Napoleon. His interest in art may have begun through a connection with the Scottish artist David Allan (1744 - 96). On his death his extensive art collection was divided between his London home and Torrie House, with the latter part eventually passing to the University of Edinburgh.
