Gavin Dunbar


(Archbishop of Glasgow)

c.1495 - 1547

Bishop and politician. The nephew of another Gavin Dunbar (c.1455 - 1532), who was Bishop of Aberdeen, Dunbar was educated at the University of Glasgow and was appointed Archbishop of Glasgow in 1525. He was tutor and confidante to King James V (1512 - 42) and acted as Lord Chancellor between 1528-39, successfully negotiating with Rome to increase the power of the King.

He died in Glasgow, where he was buried in the cathedral.
